Basically,
it's just an always returning story: a major label gets
all excited about an act from the 'underground', the
label feels really hip, they pick up these cats, and
the hoopla machine is set in motion. Then eventually,
the excitement ceases, and on a hangover morning, the
label looks at the figures, compares a to b, plan c
to d, adds all the numbers and realizes they are full
of bs, so they drop the artist, the album already done
is shoved on a shelf, instead of releasing it, to get
at least a partial return of the investment, they rather
have none. Hooray.

|
So it happened to the
Jigmastas. They were supposed to release their album
"Infectious" on the Tommy Boy Black label, that is now
defunct, and all the thrill that was surrounding the
several releases, seems to have been disappearing in
a cloud of more lucrative cash cows. So DJ Spinna and
MC Kriminul are kicked out the building, and looking
at each other, they probably said: 'oh fuck these bastards'.
Of course that's just paraphrasing it.
|
|
Because if you call
DJ Spinna to be half of your group, you can be sure
you'll be landing on your feet. Just simply because
this cat is so known for his dope beats, that a truckload
of artist, from Mos Def, to Eminem, to De La Soul, to
Pharoahe Monch, to Nightmares Of Wax, to Mary J. Blige
to labels like Talkin' Loud or Mo Wax, got Spinna's
phone number on quick dial. This dude got the beats.
But of course a team is not complete without the partner,
and while Kriminul does remains in the shadow of his
other half, Spinna even possibly be the better half,
but seriously: would Spinna even care to hang with Krim'
if that dude wouldn't have skills? Exactly.

Now plan is, that Beyond
Real, their own label will release the album, with a
little help from our friends over there in Germany,
the GrooveAttack folks. And basically, Tommy Boy can
start the ass kicking practicing sessions, cause this
album is dope. Man, Spinna was holding back some of
his best beats, so you know you'll be in for a treat.
And rounding up the package, the guests are hand picked,
with Sadat X, Truth Enola, Apani B-Fly Emcee, Akil and
Joc Max dropping by, Geology and Joc Max even getting
guest spots as producers and Vernon Ried plucking the
guitar on one track.
|
|
So what you'll get are
tracks like "Intro"
that is actually a full track, whilst a short one, sporting
one of the dopest beats on the album, and one of the
best boom bap tracks to surface in some time. Then there's
"Vent"
and "8
Million Stories" that go the traditional
Spinna route, with Kriminul doing his best spitting,
once bragging and boasting and then going the more subject
ridden route. Further samples are explored, the production
expanded to have it communicate with the lyrics on "C.S.S.",
and the last track that shall be mentioned here, will
be "Nocturnal
Jam", a track definitely sounding like
that, with Krim' doing some complementary thinking,
talking, and guiding us dancing until dawn.

Looking at the title
of the record now, this album will surely be infectious,
straying your neck with all kinds of ills, caused by
excessive movement.
