Strategically it's never
clever to change names. Still Mr. Rogers is aka Coleon.
And with the new name it does have you expect something
on the Mafia tip. But with this record dropping on Syntax
Records, you know that it will be done to represent
the Lord. That shouldn't prevent you from continuing
to read this review, or even to check the record out,
as this is actually quite nice.

Coleon can flow and
rhymes rather smoothly, but with a quick tongue, like
on "Squandering",
that manages to get us interested with these strings,
hooked up by Brother J. Co' then chills down, going
for something slower on "Relax
Ya Soul", that has laid back keyboard keys
done by Weasel and the gospel is being told too, while
not shoved down your throat. Man, even the club track
of "Stuff Be On"
works in the commercial type of vibe, not really being
what we usually enjoy, but done good, so that it does
not have to hide itself from the major competition.

|
The enjoyed series is
then ended on "If I",
that beat wise struggles, Coleon making his street approach
work, but borrowing a little too much from other peoples
flows and styles, also spitting some weak similes. But
"Ra-Ra" is okay
again, even though the piano would have been enough
and the keyboard was not needed. And Co' is getting
some serious 'regular' spitting done, shoving his cause
to the background, simply rhyming. Sade is then used
to get the women ready to do the nasty, and "Like A
Tattoo" fails. This interlude ("Choices")
is giving us a dope antithesis to all them ridiculous
sex interludes on other records. The message is kept
around on "Pass You By"
too, where life experiences are mixed with point of
views, to give us something to ponder about. There's
an almost hidden low sound on here too, that adds nice
depth.

|
We then get a really
cool offering on "Looking For
Direction", with even the crooning being
nice. The credits go to K-Love for the dope beat, while
Co' is getting a nod of approval for his guiding lyrics,
as we don't judge the content, but the intention, that
deserves props. The vibe then drastically drops with
"Wondering Why",
that explores some evils, with an according beat. Weasel
gives us another nice beat on the theological "Who's
God" before on "CREAM"
we are nodding our head to this production and the still
unstopping flow by Coleon, that explores the thens and
nows and the path in between as well as ahead. And finally
we get "Good Living Good Life",
that's telling us what's bad and in a self righteous
way, what's good, over not the best beat though.
|
|
So basically we like
this, as there is some good production on here, Coleon
can rhyme, has something to say too. In combination
we get a street preacher, that doesn't forget where
he came from, living proof of personal paradigm shifts.
We can't knock that and such honest efforts. Especially
not if they tracks are booming too.
