'Ey, charming. Not just the title, but the writing Dez put on the CD. See, he wrote 'fuck you' on the jewel case. And looking at the cover itself, the 'Fuck You. Thanks for Making Wack Music" looks written too. So 'ey, charming.
Actually 'Thanks for making whack music' would be a great title for an album. And also, Dez has some tag skills, cause his 'fuck you', as well as the Dez, etc. writing on the actual disc, looks dope. So he's good at that. But can the man rhyme? He can. He's not Rakim incarnate, but hey, so isn't Rakim today. Nevertheless Dez has a certain I don't give a damn (to avoid the f-word, that's already rather excessively used in this review, and will get us banned by all those Net Nanny services…dang) to him, a certain humor and stick it where the sun don't shine cockiness (ayo!). And on top of all of that (again: ayo!) he can flip his style too. So on a "Hollow" he's rather talking than rhyming, while he charges a "Hold The Mayo" with a ferocity not seen since the last 'when animals attack'. So basically he's one of those rappers that claim that they are so better than everyone else. What doesn't make them kick braggadocio words all the time, but their words are rather a loud scream of frustration and disses, having to face all those wwwaaaaccckkkk emcees.
So that's the rough draft of what's on here. But not just. Like on "Maternal" Dez gets actually serious with him portraying some fallen person's reality, a relationship gone hurting and a stance gone tragic, when Dez says "I got love for you mom even though you are hollow inside / but I follow your last big smile like you would swallow my pride / let's follow this ride, but it ends up in the worst place / actually I wish I was never fuckin' born in the first place". Sween is following this outburst with similar content, even though he says "it's this fucked up life that made me this strong." A very powerful song also with the sample that ends the song. It is however only one of only few serious words. The second comes on "The Least We Could Do (Breathe)" which is a deep and going deep love letter.
And it's Sween that also rides with Dez on "Hold The Mayo", on "Skin Graf" and "Pillowhead". 'Skin graf' obviously stands for a tattoo and the intention is to put if not an actual tattoo on your skin, then at least one into your mental, so that you never forget them and how you have to deal with 'em. The beat opts for a previously heard sample, still coming off good though. "Pillowhead" then allows the two to do some quick flowing, a lot of sticking the tongue into the cheek, and etc. Now there's however another and even a more high profile collaboration on here, cause "3irty 2wo" gives us a guest appearance by iCON The MicKing, over a well done Hobbyist beat.
So we get with all of that, what however does not really make everything good. Because a "Monkey Wrench" is just a little too chaotic, the voice alteration seriously unnecessary, as are the repeated 'I hate this world' rants. The piano and beat of "The Outro" is also just too much, too quick and too at the same time.
So you get a lot of aggression throughout the songs that seems as much directed at a fictitious competition as it is at Dez himself. It doesn't go as far as self mutilation, but there's moments where you hear between the lies that Dez believes he deserves to suffer. However, before this gets any more pseudo psychological, Dez manages to give a hard and rough record that's completely absent of any commercial considerations. What positions it proudly against everybody and manages to do more right than wrong.
