I Need Drugs

We all know hat a necro is. Much more than a frequent visitor to rotten.com, Poe and Hitler are said to have been such, and pretty much in every country their practices are illegal. But what does hip hop care? Man if it at one time was able to embrace polka dots, or Kriss Kross, why not to fuck corpses? Right..... Necro has somewhat been embraced by hip hop, at first for his beats, that made many Non Phixion tracks a success. But then he started to share his gore tales with us, telling us about violent climaxes, that we never really cared to hear. However, his tales our out there, and many, maybe too many, have a strange, scary attraction to this guy's dirty disgusting music. So let's welcome the quite possible first splatter emcee.

We are excused to listen to the "I Need Drugs" album, once the beat to "The Most Sadistic" comes on. Without even trying to build anything, this is started at the top, is upfront and certified head nod motivating. Not leaving any doubts, Necro goes right at it, setting the tone with "leave you in the desert 'till the vultures strip your corpse / then rape your fucking wife, until my dick is soft / 'till the flesh is pealing off / I'm a devil concealed in cloth". Ill Bill of Non Phixion shows loyalty to his comrade, as he's also blessing this track, with an explicitness that is continued throughout the album. And while the beat of "Hoe Blow" is okay, and the lyrics shift to some nymphomaniac sexual fantasies or threats, you already have to realize tat this album will not be totally satisfying. Yes, Necro's flow is tight, as tight as his preferred type of ass, and the beats are not leaving you thirsty. But the content of the lyrics is dulling you quickly, not managing to keep you excitedly shocked for the whole of the duration.

But the title track, "I Need Drugs" is keeping you totally pleased, as it's ridiculing LL's "I Need Love", opening it with "when I come home from work / I'm fiending of an eight-ball / I got crack on my mind / I'm hearing cocaine call / telling me to beep the dealer to deliver me stuff / keep it a secret from my wife / cause she thinks I don't use drugs". This works quite brilliantly and shows the unfairness of you getting overloaded by Necro's rhymes, as in actuality, things are quite exceptionally well coined and as clever and eloquent as offerings by many much hailed emcees, just on the disgusting side of things. And so again on point is "Your Fuckin' Head Split", with lines like "you a skanky bitch / I slit ya writs and clitoris / if your inhibitated I'll piss in ya syphilis and get pissed" (now say that 30 times and really fast). However, this madness is being done so perfectly, it is almost too sterile, too clean, without any dirty and greasy spots. And so "You're Dead" feat. Ill Bill again, is almost a relieve, as it's beat is missing the mark by a margin, as wide as the ass of a 2 tons mammoth. The chorus is also childishly corny, and so we don't stay with this longer than needed.

The sample on "Get On Your Knees" is used in it's most ironic way, resulting in us smilingly approaching the sexual tales that are to come: "I'm paying a good buck / so slut you better fuck as good as you look and suck as good as you fuck / when it comes to this porn shit you know who the master is / bitch I'll leave Necro tagged on your ass with jizz". Not equally dope is "Rugged Shit", that sounds like a leftover, while solid leftover track, from the Octagon collection. In this case, hearing Necro battling, that's almost as toned down he gets. It's still iller than "I'm Sick Of You", that is elaborating on little new ground, and the style is better than the content. The beat to "Cockroaches" is much more appealing though, it being very strange, edging, but the attention that it causes is gratified. Necro is dedicating this to his chosen pet animal, before he goes into "Fuck You To The Track", that again is degraded to something that is barely okay on the beat tip, very much nothing memorable. Lyrically we are revisiting the sexual aspects, with Necro going "your firm tits / I wanna lick you quite to death / and fuck your belly button and spread your legs right to left / grab my organ and give me a treatment fit for a king / lick my testicles, I'll fuck you like an extra-terrestrial / cause I last forever, while the average human body / cant handle that much pleasure".

"Burn The Groove To Death" does not leave us with saying much else, than this is nothing noteworthy. Again gory splatter lyrics are being buried underneath a horrorish beat, sometimes it works, this time it doesn't. The goose bumps are yawning too. Still refusing to be counted out, Necro returns to his feet, struggling, but at the end standing firmly with "Underground". He even starts to answer blows with "S.T.D.", that starts out cute and then ends crude, that is sounding very demon like. The underground feel is further elaborated on "WKCR 89.9 Freestyle 4/20/2000" featuring Mr. Hyde. This is a live piece of the Bobbito show. Necro shows skills over a lengthy bit, that does not quickly get boring though. Two more freestyles are following with one being "WNYU 89.1 X-Mas Freestyle 12/23/1999", Necro is unintelligently trying to piss off as many people possible, when he goes "I wish you a Mary Crucifixion / I wish you would get a new religion / I wish you a Mary Crucifixion / and a crappy New Year". The other freestyle is "WNYU 89.1 Freestyle 5/10/2000". Now either the shit he spits is prewritten, or he's truly an amazing freestyler. He flows like a maniac, talks about maniac stuff, but pulls it off masterfully.

What the album does actually accomplish to pull off, is giving an impression of the shock treatment being done in a fake and desperate way. Necro does all of it with a remarkable confidence and ease. What is also part of the problem, as he speaks all of this with a disturbing seriousness, and lacking humor. And so the album gets ridiculous after a while. Just like the same jokes are not that funny after so many times, so does the explicit manner of this album. Many beats are dope, the style is incredible, but the album still is and despite all, not totally satisfying. Well at least to this reviewer, who is quite aware, that the album is probably better than he makes it to be with this review. But I'm just not feeling it that much.
