A Prince Among Thieves

Now is this album a movie or is this movie an album? I guess no one really knows that, but I guess this album will also be a film, since there seems to be only a long form video, but not yet a future film. Prince Paul (known for his work with De La Soul, being a part of Gravediggaz and Stetsasonic). This album tells a story, like a musical does. That story is about Tariq (Breezly Brewin of the Juggaknots), who tries to get his demo done, so that he can meet up with the Wu-Tang Clan, which were talking with him about a record deal. Tru (Sha), who is like a brother to Tariq, should lend him some money for that. He gots the money, because he's the local drug dealer. These two brothers mess each other up in unbrotherlylike affairs, but that should be all that is said here.

The true genius of this album, is not only that Paul as collected a host of enormously talented and too often slept on artists, that each give every character in the plot a distinctive persona. But also because they spit rhymes, which are so imaginative, that everybody will see moving pictures in front of their mental mind: Big Daddy Kane as the pimp, Chubb Rock as Mr. Large (the big mack of the drug cartel), Xzibit, Sadat X and Kid Creole as prisoners and Everlast as Officer Bitchkowski (the cop), just to name a few.

That's even enough a reviewer has to write about this album. The uniqueness of this concept is just genius, and even if the beats are sometimes sounding a little bit old, they still have the strength to carry the phattest, and so heaviest lyrics. It shouldn't surprise you that you will go back to this album over and over again, to hear the story again, just like you watch that favorite and worn out video again and again too. This album is planting a new plant, which fruit will nourish hip hop in the best way possible. This album contains so much love and respect for hip hop, that everybody that just feels remotely the same, will hold this album dear.
