Through years of hard work and simply being good, C-Rayz Walz has a fanbase. Not the smallest too. And just the announcement that C teams up with Definitive Jux made a lot of people happy. So must this "The Essence" twelve, that features three tracks that are all going to be on the album "Ravipops (The Essence)" that's to come out later this year (July 29th, 2003).

There's no alienation happening on "The Essence", as C-Rayz just spits, shows and proves and tongue in cheekingly runs through a couple of well known words usually attributed to someone else, like "I was never slim but am still shady", after he opened the track with "I'm Ghandi with a bullet proof vest." So he's playing with contradictions here, over an up and down beat, that can get you moving. This careless vibe is even furthered on "Battle Me": "I'm like John Stockton, I don't even have to score / I just make the game better, by being out there on the floor." The hook is carried by some bird singing, giving this a little too much sugar for all the salty rough necks. They however can find themselves again in the oriental sounds of "Elephant Guns", that production wise is the most interesting on this taster. The effortless flow of Rayz is coming with a certain determination on here, with the beat just demanding such.
With three tracks, more or less versatile, the expectations for the album are set. With two entertaining, while somewhat generic tracks, and one gem amongst the pile, the album promises to be good, if C-Rayz finally gets to shine over beats that are as good as his skills.
